The COBOL specification was created by a committee of researchers from private industry, universities, and government during the second half of 1959. The specifications were to a great extent inspired by the FLOW-MATIC language invented by Grace Hopper - commonly referred to as "the mother of the COBOL language." The IBM COMTRAN language invented by Bob Bemer was also drawn upon, but the FACT language specification from Honeywell was not distributed to committee members until late in the process and had relatively little impact. FLOW-MATICs status as the only language of the bunch to have actually been implemented made it particularly attractive to the committee.
The scene was set on April 8, 1959 at a meeting of computer manufacturers, users, and university people at the University of Pennsylvania Computing Center. The United States Department of Defense subsequently agreed to sponsor and oversee the next activities. A meeting chaired by Charles A. Phillips was held at the Pentagon on May 28 and 29 of 1959 (exactly one year after the Zürich ALGOL 58 meeting); there it was decided to set up three committees: short, intermediate and long range (the last one was never actually formed). It was the Short Range Committee, chaired by Joseph Wegstein of the US National Bureau of Standards, that during the following months created a description of the first version of COBOL. The committee was formed to recommend a short range approach to a common business language. The committee was made up of members representing six computer manufacturers and three government agencies. The six computer manufacturers were Burroughs Corporation, IBM, Minneapolis-Honeywell (Honeywell Labs), RCA, Sperry Rand, and Sylvania Electric Products. The three government agencies were the US Air Force, the Navys David Taylor Model Basin, and the National Bureau of Standards (now National Institute of Standards and Technology). The intermediate-range committee was formed but never became operational. In the end a sub-committee of the Short Range Committee developed the specifications of the COBOL language. This sub-committee was made up of six individuals:
- William Selden and Gertrude Tierney of IBM
- Howard Bromberg and Howard Discount of RCA
- Vernon Reeves and Jean E. Sammet of Sylvania Electric Products
The first compilers for COBOL were subsequently implemented in 1960, and on December 6 and 7, essentially the same COBOL program ran on two different computer makes, an RCA computer and a Remington-Rand Univac computer, demonstrating that compatibility could be achieved.

Analytical DBMS: SQL Server 2012 Parallel Data Warehouse (PDW).

Microsofts vision is to provide a complete information production process for data -- all data. It has embraced Hadoop for high-scale and unstructured data, partnering to build HDInsight based on the Hortonworks Data Platform. HDInsight is available as a service on Microsofts Azure Cloud or can be used on premises. You manage HDInsight with Microsoft Systems Center, virtualize its resources with Microsoft Virtual Machine Manager, and control access to its data with Active Directory. Drawing from the hundreds of terabytes or petabytes in Hadoop, Microsoft customers can then analyze boiled-down result sets in SQL Server Parallel Data Warehouse. PDW is a massively parallel processing DBMS that includes a PolyBase access layer for combining non-relational data from Hadoop and structured data from a PDW warehouse or mart.
Microsoft analyzes streaming data with Microsoft StreamInsight, and it handles high-volume machine-data and technical analysis with its High Performance Computing Cluster. No matter how complex or high-scale the challenge, Microsoft sees the analysis getting back to SQL Server Analysis Services, Information Integration Services, Reporting Services, Master Data Services, and the worlds most popular BI tool, Office Excel with PowerPivot for in-memory analysis and PowerView for data visualization.
Theres no doubt that Microsoft is amassing all the pieces, but its early days for HDInsight, and we still dont see many PDW deployments after three years in the market. Were watching to see whether the release of SQL Server 2014, expected in the first half of this year, and the fast growth of the Windows Azure cloud, with its public data market and HDInsight service, help elevate Microsofts name in enterprise big data.

Every once in awhile a browser plug-in will show up in Firefox whether you gave it permission to be there by accident or maybe without any permission at all. A top Mozilla executive is tired of it and has called on Microsoft, Apple and Google to stop the practice of allowing browser plug-ins to install automatically.
Asa Dotzler, the co-founder of the Spread Firefox project and a member of Mozillas leadership team, says the big three are evil and their plug-ins are being installed without user permission. Dotzler went off on a bit of a tangent on his blog.
Why do Microsoft, Google, Apple, and others think that it is an OK practice to add plug-ins to Firefox when Im installing their software packages? When I installed iTunes, in order to manage my music collection and sync to my iPod, why did Apple think it was OK to add the iTunes Application Detector plug-in to my Firefox web browser without asking me? Why did Microsoft think it was OK to sneak their Windows Live Photo Gallery or Office Live Plug-in for Firefox into my browser (presumably) when I installed Microsoft Office? What makes Google think its reasonable behavior for them to slip a Google Update plug-in into Firefox when I installed Google Earth or Google Chrome (not sure which one caused this) without asking me first?
The attack on Google is a little surprising, as the search deal Mozilla has with Google provides most of their income. Even still, he went on to bite the proverbial hand that feeds him.
Google, Microsoft, Apple, RockMelt, and any others out there who are doing this, Im calling on you to stop this now. If you want to add software to my system, ask me. Sneaking software onto my system that I didnt ask for is evil (precisely in the Google "dont be evil" sense.)
He concluded his rant by saying that Firefox could do more to prevent this type of behavior, but doesnt feel that they should have to waste their energy fighting against companies that should be considered trustworthy. Closing out, he requested one thing of the software companies: "ASK first!"
